Canyoneers passenger Evan Kastner did an on-river interview of Greg Reiff, owner of the historic Nevills cataract boat the Sandra in July 2011.

Greg tells the amazing story of how he came to be rowing the boat that was named after his mother and built in 1947 by his grandfather, pioneering river runner Norman Nevills. The Sandra accompanies all Canyoneers oar trips, which run in June, July, and August.

Running Lava Falls in the Historic Cataract Boat "Sandra"

The water that is released from the Glen Canyon Dam is ice cold. The temperature hovers around 48 degrees. Even on the hottest day at the bottom of the Grand Canyon getting splashed by it will take your breath away. It’s so cold that it’s been known to cause hypothermia, heart attacks and even death.

The day we approached Lava Falls rapid it was hot. As we rounded the corner I could hear the roar of the falls. It sounded like a locomotive headed at us. We headed to the scouting point on the left bank. The guides and passengers scrambled up the rocks for a better view. A plan was devised. We would plan to enter left, but not too far left as rocks and a hole lurked. The real concern, however, was the massive ledge hole in the middle of the run. If your boat or raft enters this hole no good will come of it. Simply flipping your boat and sending you on a swim in the icy waters are the least of your worries. A phenomenon known as “window shading” can occur. A boat can be turned sideways and then be repeatedly flipped over and over again as the hydraulics of the water can rip and shred the rubber from the frame.

Did I mention we would be riding down in a fully restored 15 ft. wooden cataract boat? The “Sandra” built in 1947 by Norm Nevills would be piloted by Greg Reiff, grandson of the pioneer boat builder. The “Sandra” is 5 ft. wide at its stern and has been restored to its original condition.

So, we climbed into the boat. Greg Paulin was in the fisheye position in the front of the boat. Greg Reiff was piloting in the middle and I would be in the queen seat leaning into the waves to help balance the boat and bailing water as needed. As we pulled away from shore Greg Reiff turned to me and we shared a joke and a smile. Then, he pivoted around, sat down, and began to row. We headed into what seemed like the eye of a hurricane. The water was big. The river is running at 24,000 CFS [cubic feet per second]. Greg maneuvered the “Sandra” and hit his line perfectly. We ran between the two holes. The boat was hit from the left by a large wave, we pushed through. Then, the second wave hit, also, from the left. The “Sandra” met it head on and strained past it. Greg Reiff worked to pivot the boat in the direction of the third wave. This, the biggest of the 3 waves would come from the right. We leaned and the “Sandra” never flinched.

We came through Lava safely. We were excited, relieved and even a bit giddy. Greg pulled the boat into an eddy on the left side so we could bail and check the progress of our fellow boatsmen. It was at this point I noticed I was knee deep in water and completely soaked from head to toe. They say the water of the Colorado is frigid. It can take your breath away. Mmmm…I hadn’t noticed.

"For sure we are ending this river journey with lifetime memories that I will tuck away in my heart and soul forever! The beauty of the Grand Canyon is indescribable and this experience on the river is the ultimate. We have had a 'cream of the crop' crew. Add to all of this Greg Reiff, who has lovingly been called 'Rev. Navajo Bridges and Colorado River, Marble Canyon Near Lees Ferry

Our Grand Canyon river rafting trips that begin in Flagstaff (All the Grand, and Upper Grand) include transportation to Lees Ferry, where all Grand Canyon boats put in to the Colorado River.

Riding from the cool mountain Ponderosa pine country at Flagstaff, then down across the Painted Desert on the western edge of the Navajo Nation, one sees the distant Vermilion Cliffs slowly getting closer.

Finally, it's time to cross the Colorado River, on Navajo Bridge. Suddenly you're whizzing across the silver span, 470 feet above the river. It's the first chance you've even had to glimpse the river, so it's a doubly impressive view.

Their are two Navajo Bridges. The one on the right became too small for modern traffic, so it is now a tourist pedestrian bridge. On the east end, which is on the Navajo Nation, you will see Navajo artists selling their exquisite jewelry, pottery, etc. On the other end is the National Park Service's visitor center. There is no fee on either side, so it's a fantastic place to stop. You might even see a few California condors perched on the struts underneath the bridge, or on the nearby cliffs.

You will be passing beneath Navajo Bridge soon after your river trip launches. You will be at 3,100 feet in elevation, having begun the ride at 7,000 feet in Flagstaff.

June Oar Trip Put-In at Lees Ferry

Our June 2011 oar trip put-in on the Colorado River at Lees Ferry on June 14. The boats are put into the water, rigged up, and loaded with supplies. The river guides then camp out that night, and everything is ready for when the passengers arrive the following morning.

Our June and August oar trips have motorized support, meaning that one of our big 37-foot C-Craft boats goes along. This has the advantage of being able to carry a lot more fresh and frozen food. The big boat does not mix in with the smaller 16-foot Avon rafts. It either goes ahead or lags behind, so that the passengers in the oar boats have a motor-free experience. Another advantage of having it along is that, if anyone is uncomfortable going through the big rapids in the smaller rafts, they're always welcome to go through them on the big boat.

Evening at Lees Ferry is spectacular. The lower the sun gets, the warmer the cliff colors become, reflecting off the blue of the Colorado River. In this photo, Cliff Ghiglieri, Drew Houser, Greg Reiff, and Cassie Micheli chat while rigging the C-Craft.

River to Rim: Hiking the Bright Angel Trail

On April 4, Canyoneers river guides Greg Reiff, Tom Myers, Heidi Moen, and Cliff Ghiglieri, along with Reservations Assistant Steve Krieg, hiked out from the Colorado River at Pipe Creek (just below Phantom Ranch), up to the South Rim via the Bright Angel Trail.

The Bright Angel Trail is the one used by our river trip passengers that are doing a partial Canyon trip. For our Best of the Grand trips, they hike down the "BA" to the river, then do the lower two-thirds of Grand Canyon. Our Upper Grand passengers hike up the BA after two full days on the river.

Hiking up the Bright Angel Trail is quite strenuous, as it is 7.7 miles from the junction with the River Trail to the trailhead at the South Rim (9.6 miles from Phantom Ranch, including the River Trail). But more importantly, you will be climbing about 4,500 feet (1,360 meters) in elevation, in a hot desert canyon environment. All hikes are accompanied by our hiking guide, to inform the hikers how to stay as safe and comfortable as possible.

Canyoneers conducted a Grand Canyon training trip for their river guides during the first week of April. One of the assignments was to make a video of visiting Phantom Ranch, the only facility in Grand Canyon below the Rims. Many of our partial-canyon river trips include a night staying at Phantom, and so we wanted to show what it looks like and why getting to stay there is a very sought-after experience.

As it was early April, the weather was colder than most of our river passengers will experience, but it's a fun and worthwhile tour anyway (being with river guides is always fun).

Give us some background on Canyoneers and your history with the company.

Canyoneers began in 1938 as Nevills Expeditions when Norman Nevills organized and led the first commercial trip down the Colorado River through Grand Canyon in small wooden rowboats called cataract boats. Norm and his wife Doris died in a private plane crash in 1949, and after that two of his boatmen, Frank Wright and Jim Rigg took over the company under the name of Mexican Hat River Expeditions. My husband, Gaylord, was a passenger on a 1956 river trip with Mexican Hat Expeditions. He told Frank he'd like to run some trips for them. Then, much to Gaylord's surprise, Frank offered Gaylord a partnership in the business! After the end of the 1957 season, Frank offered to sell his remaining interest in the company to Gaylord who accepted enthusiastically. In 1970 Gaylord put the small wooden rowboats aside, switched to the larger, rubber pontoon rafts, incorporated, and changed the company name to the present day Canyoneers.

I met my husband on a Canyoneers river trip in 1978. I was a passenger on a week-long river trip, and he happened to be on the trip escorting a writer who was doing a Grand Canyon story. Gaylord and I met in camp the first night out on the river. Halfway through the trip he told me he was going to marry me! I thought that was a "boatman's line" and didn't really believe him. The trip came off the river on a Saturday. I flew home the following Sunday. Monday morning, Gaylord phoned me at my work in Beverly Hills, Calif. and asked if I would meet him in Phoenix for dinner that night! I was a vice president and office manager for Coldwell Banker Escrow. I asked one of my staff if she would drive me to the airport so I could catch a flight to Phoenix that evening. After dinner, Gaylord officially proposed to me and I accepted! We were married a month later on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon overlooking the part of the Canyon where we first met. So you see, it was love at first sight for both of us. That was 32 years ago.

After about six months, I began working in the office with my husband and gradually started to learn the river running business and the politics of working under the National Park Service. I've done pretty much everything in the company except pilot a raft and fix a motor! I've handled reservations, purchasing, inventory control, bookkeeping, passenger orientations, equipment maintenance, river and warehouse operations and even Washington, D.C. lobbying. A little over a year ago, with my husband spending much of his time writing a book on Grand Canyon river running history, he transferred the title of President of Canyoneers to me while he remains Chairman of the Board. We really do make a great team!

What makes a Grand Canyon rafting trip so special?

What is your favorite part of a rafting trip?

My favorite part of our rafting trips is the scenery. There is nothing quite like seeing the Grand Canyon from the bottom, on the river. People come for the thrill of the rapids, but I think it's the scenery that stays with them for a lifetime.

Tell us about Flagstaff's connection to the rafting community.

Flagstaff has long been known as the base for numerous Grand Canyon rafting companies. Half of the Grand Canyon rafting companies, including Canyoneers, have warehouses in Flagstaff and many Grand Canyon river guides call Flagstaff their home. This is just natural, considering that the South Rim of Grand Canyon is just an hour and a half drive from Flagstaff. Flagstaff is an outdoor adventure community with longstanding ties to the Grand Canyon.

When you're not working, what are some of your favorite things to do in Flagstaff?

Most of my time is spent working. I am involved in a number of small business organizations in Flagstaff and at the State level and serve on several boards, so I don't seem to have much spare time. I used to enjoy skiing at Arizona Snowbowl when I was younger. Now I really enjoy taking advantage of some of the great lectures held at the Cline Library at NAU and taking in events at the Ardrey Auditorium when I can. I always enjoy taking my two German Shepherds out for walks, or just jogging by myself in the clean Flagstaff air under our spectacular blue skies. Dinner out with my husband at some of Flagstaff's fine restaurants is always a pleasure, as is our tradition of Sunday breakfasts at Brandys!

Canyoneers Guides Ready the Paddle Raft on the Training Trip

The Canyoneers river guides recently went on a training trip in Grand Canyon, starting with the put-in at Lees Ferry on April 1. The weather was all over the place: hot to start, but snow on the river on the last morning! As usual, our intrepid crew had to (and did) handle everything with amazing adeptness.

One of the highlights of the trip was the paddle raft that Cassie brought along. She conducted orientation on paddle boat technique during the scout of House Rock Rapid, then they ran it.

The 2011 Grand Canyon River Season Approaches!

Here at the Canyoneers river shop in Flagstaff, Arizona, spring is in the air. April is almost here, and that means our first motorized trips of the 2011 season.

Both of our April "All the Grand" full canyon river trips have been full for months. Apparently people are as eager to go down Grand Canyon this year as we are to take them.

Our river shop is awakening from another northern Arizona winter, with more and more of our river guides stopping by to talk about scheduling and help get things ready. Our commissary is undergoing spring cleaning to accept food deliveries again. River supplies have been arriving. Our river guides will be going down the Canyon together on April 2 for a training trip.

And of course, people have been calling and emailing our office all winter, inquiring about availability and asking questions about everything from camping to how to get to Flagstaff or to the South Rim.

In short, the energy level and feelings of anticipation are quickly rising.

We have been filling fast for this season, with many trips already full. There is still some early season (May) availability, but not much. June? Also very limited. Call us right away to inquire about availability: 928-526-0924.

July 2010 Oar Trip: Sandy Nevills Rides the Sandra, Historic Cataract Boat

The Canyoneers July 2010 oar trip through Grand Canyon was rather an historic honeymoon trip for two members of the Canyoneers family. As always, our oar rafts were accompanied by the historic Nevills cataract boat the Sandra, the only authentic, restored Nevills cataract boat still working Grand Canyon. All the other surviving Nevills boats are in museums or in private collections.

The Sandra was the last cataract boat that legendary river runner Norman Nevills (who was also the first commercial river runner in Grand Canyon) built, in 1947. He named it after his little daughter Sandy, who christened the boat at Lees Ferry.

The Sandra is now owned by Greg Reiff, son of Sandy Nevills Reiff, and himself a third generation Grand Canyon river runner. Greg rows the boat on Canyoneers' June and July trips each year. Greg saved the boat from a slow death by decay when he had the boat restored by Andy Hutchinson, master boat builder from Colorado, who rows the boat on the August trips. The boat was then re-christened at Lees Ferry by Sandy.

In this video, Greg explains how his mom will be coming along on the trip, at times riding on the Sandra while Greg rows. Accompanying them is Earl Weimer, who worked one season as a Grand Canyon river guide for Mexican Hat Expeditions, which is what Canyoneers used to be called. Earl had not been down the Canyon since.

What's more, Earl and Sandy had dated in high school, some 50 years ago, and hadn't seen each other since. Their paths then crossed again, and they married soon after. Now they will go down the river in Grand Canyon for the first time together, on the historic cataract boat named for Sandy, rowed by her son.

Grand Canyon in Winter, South Rim

Here at Canyoneers our world revolves around Grand Canyon year round. Our 2011 river season doesn't begin until April 17, but Sheri, Steve, John, and Joy are in the office and River Shop full time getting ready. Our river guides that live locally during the winter stop by occasionally to see how things are going and to talk.

Steve Krieg (in this photo), whom many of you have become familiar with this past year by having talked with him on the phone about reservations for 2011 river trips, loves to go to the South Rim when there is snow. He prowls the overlooks searching for new photos, and does some hiking as well. Here he is at the overlook called The Abyss, which is on the Hermit Road west of Grand Canyon Village. He especially likes the Hermit Road in the winter, because visitation is light enough that the Park Service allows people to drive it instead of taking the free shuttle buses.

"Keep It Clean!"

"Grand Canyon. I love this place. Keep it clean!" Thus our Trip Leader, Brandon Green, summarized his attitude toward river rafting through the Canyon.

It was May 30, 2010 and the start of Brandon's 86th Grand Canyon river trip for Canyoneers. He was leading a two boat trip, with Pilot Jacob Snyder in charge of the second boat.

Some of the passengers would be doing "All the Grand", a 7-day, 6-night motorized raft trip of the entire Canyon, from Lees Ferry to Lake Mead. Other passengers were doing our 3-day Upper Grand trip, and would hike from the river to the South Rim on their last day, their seats being replaced by passengers hiking down from the rim to do the lower two thirds of the Canyon, which we call our "Best of the Grand" 5 day motorized trip.

All Grand Canyon river rafting trips begin at historic Lees Ferry on the Colorado River. Lees Ferry is located downstream from Glen Canyon Dam (Lake Powell), at the upper end of the Marble Canyon portion of Grand Canyon. The spectacular walls of Marble Canyon rise straight up for about 500 feet there, but they wouldn't be that, uh, short for long. Because the further down the river you go, the higher the canyon walls get. Much, much higher.

The smooth water downstream from Lees Ferry is the perfect opportunity for the river guides to give further orientation to the passengers about how things are run on the boat. The focus of the guides is: Safety, comfort, and fun for all their passengers.

Soon it would be time to run our first significant rapid on the Colorado River.
